How much does life insurance with Haven Life cost?

Overall, Haven Life offers competitive term life insurance premiums whether you take a medical exam or not.

Lots of folks who smoke or have medical conditions can find competitive rates with Haven Life after taking a medical exam. Check out our list of best life insurance for preexisting conditions if you’re concerned about getting life insurance coverage.

While life insurers that offer a no medical exam option typically charge more than those that do, Haven manages to stay more competitive.  Haven saves money during its underwriting process, then passes those savings onto customers in the form of lower premiums.

All applications for coverage begin on Haven’s website, so the company never pays out a commission to insurance agents. Plus, all no exam life insurance policies rely on an algorithm, not human staff, to crunch numbers during the underwriting process.

Why you should consider Haven Life insurance

Haven Life lives up to its slogan, “Life insurance that’s actually simple.” This company truly understands the needs of modern families and offers a fully online application process and fast coverage.

Haven Life’s quick application process seems to be designed to help today’s busy families apply for an instant term life insurance policy. If that’s what you’re looking for, Haven Life may be an excellent choice.

Plenty of death benefit payout options

Although Haven Life doesn’t offer any form of permanent life insurance (life insurance that doesn’t end after a specific term), the company provides extensive payout options for its term life policies. Some companies offer only a handful of death benefit options, but Haven Life applicants can dial in coverage with $50,000 increments starting at $100,000 and reaching $3 million.

Immediate life insurance coverage—with some caveats

One of Haven Life’s most attractive perks is the possibility of having immediate coverage after a fully online application process. You could start sleeping better tonight knowing you already protected your loved ones.

Of course, there are a few catches. If you want to avoid taking a medical exam and waiting for a longer application process, you'll need to fit into a particular category of consumer.

Healthy people under 45 years old could get approved in an hour or less. These shoppers will also need to limit their payout to $1 million of coverage or less if they prioritize immediate coverage.

If you don’t fit that mold, your application process may last longer, and you’ll probably have to take a medical exam. If that applies to you, check out this list of best term life insurance companies that don't do medical exams.

If you’re 60 or older, you’ll have fewer term options. You can apply for the company’s 10-, 15-, or 20-year policies but not its 30-year term life policy. While this cut-off remains pretty standard among insurers, you might find other options with our list of best life insurance for seniors.

How Haven Life's financial strength compares

Haven Life is owned and backed by Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company, which most people know as simply MassMutual. And that wide recognition is a result of MassMutual’s size and financial stability. It means the company will likely still be around should your beneficiaries need to collect on your life insurance policy.

Table created using information available at AMBest.com, StandardAndPoors.com, Moodys.com, and FitchRatings.com. Data effective 4/17/2020.

All four top financial ratings entities give MassMutual high marks. A.M. Best, the gold standard for the insurance industry, provides the company with a stable A++, its highest financial-strength rating. S&P gives Mass Mutual its second highest rating, while Moodys and Fitch each give MassMutual their third highest. In terms of financial stability, MassMutual nails it.

Claims and customer service

In addition to stability, MassMutual also excels at claims. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) reports just 11 officially filed complaints against the company in 2019. Considering Mass mutual brought in over $17.6 billion in premiums, those complaints are a figurative drop in a bucket.1

Digging deeper into what kinds of complaints consumers have filed against MassMutual, we see only two of the 11 resulted from term life policies, suggesting all other complaints had nothing to do with the Haven Life brand.

Meanwhile, J.D. Power rated MassMutual 12th out of 24 for overall customer satisfaction in its 2019 US Life Insurance Study.2

Bottom line: Quick, easy, dependable term life insurance coverage

Whether you’re able to complete an application online or need to take a medical exam, Haven Life makes an excellent choice for many modern families.

Haven Life has a lot going for it: financial stability, excellent customer service, and an easy application process. Sure, the company offers only term life (check out MassMutual for other top-notch policies). But Haven Life fulfills its promise of simplified coverage, even for those who end up needing a medical exam as part of their application.

In an industry where companies plan by the decade and notoriously move at the speed of a fax machine in an email-fast world, Haven Life brings term life into the 21st century.

If you’re looking for simple, fast coverage at a low price, consider Haven Life insurance.

Haven Life FAQ

What is a medically underwritten life insurance policy?

Also known as a fully underwritten or exam required policy, a medically underwritten life insurance policy considers your health and medical history when calculating your rate. Learn more about what life insurance medical exams test for.

What if I have to take a medical exam with Haven Life?

Although many people receive approval within an hour without an exam, those who don't will need to take a medical exam within 30 days. The exam itself takes about 20 minutes, and you can schedule a trained paramedic to come to you. If you've already taken a medical exam for a life insurance application in the past year, you might be able to use those results instead.
