Can I Buy Life Insurance for my Father?

Finding life insurance can be a difficult journey. One of the primary hindrances is that the insured is not that interested in leaving behind final expense or burial insurance. For larger policies, the key is knowing which of the top 10 best life insurance companies or top no medical exam companies to choose. Give us a call today and we will help you find the right company and policy for your father.

Can I Buy Life Insurance for my Dad?

In the following article we will address how to get life insurance for your dad.

Typically, when we’re asked the question “can I get life insurance for my father?” or “I want to get life insurance for my dad” it’s usually because the person calling in is worried about what would happen if their father were to pass away without life insurance.  For example:

  • Who would pay for their burial expenses?
  • How would his heirs survive “financially” after he was gone?

After all, if there isn’t any life insurance in place the question then becomes, “Is there a plan in place to make sure everyone would be taken care of in the event of your dad’s death?”

In situations like these, the uninsured father may be uninsured because:

  • They have some type of pre-existing condition preventing them from being able to find coverage or affordable coverage.
  • They don’t feel that they need to have any life insurance.
  • Or they may simply not “believe” that life insurance is important.

This is why it can be difficult to get life insurance for dad when dad does not want to be involved in the process of getting insured!  After all, depending on the type of life insurance being applied for, getting approved for life insurance may be considered too much work for these individuals who aren’t all that interested in getting insured in the first place!

If your father has no life insurance please give us a call and we’ll be happy to explain what we can do to help you get life insurance for someone else.

The Real Question Behind “Can I buy life insurance for my father?”

We’ve found that most of the time when we’re asked, “Can I buy life insurance on my dad?”, the person is asking the question because their father just won’t seem to get life insurance on their own.

It may be due to reasons such as:

  • They don’t think they need it,
  • They don’t like doctors,
  • They don’t trust insurance companies, or
  • They think it’s too creepy to talk about how the will one day die.

And the truth is, people will make up a million different reasons to avoid buying life insurance. But that doesn’t change the fact that one day, everyone, including your father, will die.

100% of all Americans will eventually die, of those, only 52% will have life insurance in place.

So by asking “Can I get life insurance on my dad?” what one is usually asking is:

“Can I get life insurance on my dad without him taking an active role in the process?”

Short answer:  Yes.

Complete answer:  It depends.

“Ok, so tell me how can I buy life insurance on my father?”

Let’s just assume that your father is OK with you getting life insurance on him.  He’s OK with it, but he’s just not going to go out of his way to make it easy for you or the insurance company.

In cases like these, there are a few different insurance companies that will offer complete term life insurance coverage up to $500,000 that would go in force within 24 hours after a brief phone interview.

In our experiences, we’ve found that if you can:

  • Eliminate the need for a complete medical exam,
  • Allow everything to be completed over the phone in just a few minutes, and
  • Get rid of the long approval process, even the most stubborn applicant can be persuaded to get insured!

What if my father isn’t willing to pay the premium?

This happens all the time. Getting life insurance on dad might be hindered by the fact that dad does not have the funds or does not agree to pay for the life insurance. A solution is that a family member will often pay the premium for another loved one just so that they can be sure that the policy remains in effect.

Attention:  Insurance companies get a little sensitive about this one.  After all, insurance carriers don’t really want to find themselves allowing someone to insure another individual without the insured having knowledge of the fact.  For this reason, some carriers (but not all) may require the initial payment to be made by the insured, and then switched to another individual after the first premium is collected.

This is where working with TermLife2Go can make all the difference in the world because with dozens of different insurance carriers to choose from, including the best final expense and burial insurance companies, we’re sure to find one with a payment method that will work for even the most difficult of situations.

Is there a way to get a policy on my father without him being involved..too many step siblings around him to interfere…he is in another area five hours away from me.

    • TermLife2Go

We here at TermLife2Go make it a requirement for all of our agents to speak directly to the “proposed insured” prior to completing an application for them.

That said however, you may be able to contact an insurance company directly and see if they have different requirements during underwriting (We don’t believe so, but you never know).

I’ve got one for you. My dad is 79 and has gone through two cancers; bladder cancer in remission that was treated in 2016 and throat cancer where he has had a full laryngectomy (he cannot speak) also in 2016.
He is not in treatment anymore but goes in for check ups.
Otherwise he has never smoked and is not overweight–Good health.
Can I own a policy on him? He will not be able to speak to you over the phone for obvious reasons, but I do have full power of attorney.
    Thanks, Alaska

That’s a tricky one. Under normal circumstances, you should be able to purchase a life insurance policy on your father provided that he would be able to qualify for coverage.

In such cases, insurance companies will typically like to get a verbal acknowledgement that coverage is being put into place. Since it doesn’t look like this is possible we would need to have the insurance company make an exception.

We’ll have one of our agents reach out to you via email so that they can learn more about your situation and see if we can provide an option for you to consider.

My question is my mother passed away about 5 years ago my siblings have now taking my father out of his home and put them into an elderly care facility his burial expenses are covered through the military but I’ve come on hard times and I’d like to get life insurance out on my father I hear that my sisters are taking all his rights away from him so he has no say in his personal affairs and also with his estate it has already been divided among my siblings and without me knowing anything I just found this out I would like to take out a policy I just need to know will I be able to do this without his signature or do I need to get a signature through my sister and it’s not for a personal gains it is only to help with his extra burial cost and any thing else that I do know that he would like due to my siblings never asking or speaking to him prior to him being taken out of his own home please get back to me as soon as possible time is an issue thank you I live in Phoenix Arizona and my father lives in Oahu

In order to be able to assist you in finding a life insurance policy that your father would be able to qualify for, we would need his permission and ultimately his signature in order to “place” the policy. Our advice would be to try to speak with your sisters and discuss the “need” you guys may have for insurance to cover any final expenses that the military might not cover.

Looking for insurance to cover dad”s burial and other final expenses. He refuses to discuss or address the issue. My mother passed 7 years ago and it was very difficult, but not having the funds/security to cover all of the final expenses made it even more difficult. I am the only sibling who seems concerned about this situation. What are my options?
Dad, is 73, by the way.

    • TermLife2Go

We know how difficult it can be for some to discuss the inevitable. Our best suggestion would be to simply give us a call, get all the information including pricing and then speak to your dad with all the facts and “numbers” in hand.

This way, you’ll only need to have the discussion once, and hopefully he’ll be willing to allow you to get everything “set up”.

I want life insurance on my dad in Illinois. He will probably live 20more years (he is70) his father and grandparents all lived in their 90s but he is on social security and doesn’t think he needs it. He lives in Illinois and I live in NC. He is not opposed to it but won’t sign up for it or pay a monthly amount if I pay him. Can I get for myself (42) and add him even if he is out of state?

    • TermLife2Go

You can be the owner of a life insurance policy on your father, however you father would need to acknowledge that the policy is being taken out on him. For more details, just give us a call and we’d be happy to go over what options may be available to you.

  6. Christina J

Want life insurance on my dad. A small one he has burial taken care of but when my mom died she had burial taken care of also but it cost me out of pocket a lot for flowers on caskets, opening of grave. Etc it adds up just want help with that thanks.

    • TermLife2Go

Just give us a call when you have a chance and we would be happy to go over a couple of options for you.

  7. Angel M

I live with my dad, and he is helping me open up a business. My dad is in great health for being 74 years young. He has never smoked, never drank an alcoholic beverage in his entire life. I want to take out a life insurance policy, but he got upset with me. My mom passed away 6 years ago, and the financial burden was heavy. I don’t want to go through this with my dad. I want to be the owner of the policy, and was wondering if he will need to sign the paperwork. I feel he may fight me on this. But I need to feel secure. I don’t want to deal with the burden of his debt.

    • TermLife2Go

We get these types of requests all the time, and in our experiences, once a family member understands what a financial burden it will be even to cover the most basic funeral service, most family members (even the most stubborn ones) will relent.

Our advice would be to just give us a call so you can get an idea on the cost, this way, when you compare the cost of an insurance policy with that of actually paying for a burial, you’ll have much more information at hand to help your father understand why you’re looking at purchasing some life insurance coverage.

As for being the owner of the policy, that won’t be a big deal, but we will need him to acknowledge that insurance is being taken out on his behalf which will usually be accomplished by having him sign the application.

I’m looking to get life insurance on my father. He lives or on a farm with his sister. They both have been with income for a long period of time. Im not sure about his health for the simple fact that he is a hermit and doesn’t like talking about much of anything. My mother passed 7 years ago and it took a toll on my brother and I. I’m just looking to cover funeral home cremation cost.

  9. Matt D

I just lost my mom. It has taken quite a hit on me financially. I was wondering if I could get a policy on my dad to prevent this happening again. Please email me.

    • TermLife2Go

We’re sorry to hear about your loss and can completely understand why you would now want to explore your options with regards to your father.

That being said however, we would need to know how much life insurance coverage you’re looking for as well as your father’s current health before we would know what types of life insurance policies he may or may not be eligible for.

For this reason, why don’t you just give us a call when you have a chance and we’ll be happy to help you out!

  10. Roger M

My dad has a small policy, he has had 4 heart attacks but is in stable to good condition now. He has no financial stability and I was wondering if there is any way to get a $250,000 policy on him as myother would be moving in with me and I will be responsible for all her and his bills after his passing. Thank you

    • TermLife2Go

It sounds like it will be tough to find a $250,000 dollar life insurance policy for your father with that type of medical history. That being said, we wouldn’t know for sure until we learned a little bit more about your father’s current health.

Why don’t you just give us a call when you have a chance and we’ll see what we can do.

  11. Tamara helzer

  12. Tiesha Chance-Johnson

Can I get life insurance for my parents who do not live in the usa and are not us residents or citizens?

    • TermLife2Go

For us here at TermLife2Go, all applicants need to be in the United States when they’re applying for life insurance.

Then once this initial requirement has been satisfied, we’ll need to dive in a bit deeper to see if in fact your parents would be eligible for life insurance through a US based life insurance company.

  13. Antonio Stewart

I was wondering can i put a insurance policy on my dad, cuz i know he ain’t gone leave nothing for me to bury him since my mom left?

    • TermLife2Go

We get this question all the time, and the answer is “yes”.

Most companies will require that we speak with your father first, but, what we would recommend that you do is give us a call so that we can discuss all of your options with you and be sure that any policy that you chose to purchase will allow you to be the “owner” of the policy so that only you can make changes to it.

  15. Gina Truesdale

I am interested in buying l
Buriel insurance for my mom and dad. They dont see the need for it.

    • TermLife2Go

Why don’t you give us a call when you have a chance, this way we can go over your options and see if it makes sense to purchase a small final expense policy for your mother and father.

You never know, your mom and dad could be right, and not need any insurance or… they may not fully understand just how expensive a burial can be.

  16. Dawn

As far as I know my dad does have a life ins. Policy but I want to know if I can take another one out on him. Since he got married I’m no longer primary beneficiary also he lives out of state.

    • TermLife2Go

There’s a chance that you can get additional coverage on your father since having multiple policies in place is a common occurrence. What we would have to know first however is… Do you have an “insurable interest” in insuring your father and… will your father “financially” qualify for additional coverage? For these reasons we would definitely need to speak with you directly to see if we’ll be able to help you out. So just give us a call when you have a chance.
