When life insurance companies create commercials and advertisements, they like to promote rates for clients that are in excellent condition in their 30’s and 40’s. They’ll usually quote a 10 year term policy mainly because these rates are really good at getting people’s attention.
Because Xalatan is used to treat glaucoma, it’s usage generally shouldn’t play a role in the outcome of your insurance application.
Or in other words, you should still be able to qualify for the “preferred plus” rate while using Xalatan.
What is Glaucoma? And when can it become a concern to an insurance underwriter?
Glaucoma is a condition that tends to be inherited whereby the internal pressure with the eye (intraocular pressure) increases. This increase in pressure can damage the optic nerve, which transmits images to the brain and if continued will cause permanent loss of vision.
Even though using Xalatan isn’t necessarily going to be a concern for an insurance underwriter, untreated glaucoma that could lead to permanent blindness could!
Additionally (and we won’t argue the issue here), there has been the “theory” since the early 1970’s that marijuana can treat folks who have been diagnosed with glaucoma.
Now without getting into a morale debate about the harmful effects or addictive nature of using marijuana, one thing we can say for certain is that it has “yet to be determined” if marijuana is really a proper treatment for marijuana as noted below:
“The idea that marijuana can be helpful in treating glaucoma dates to the 1970s. Studies conducted then showed that smoking marijuana lowered the IOP of people with glaucoma. As a result of this research, additional studies were conducted examining whether marijuana or its active ingredient, a compound known as THC, could be used to keep IOP lowered. This research was supported by the National Eye Institute, a division of the federal National Institutes of Health.
The research found that when marijuana is smoked or when a form of its active ingredient is taken as a pill or by injection, it does lower IOP. However, it only lowers IOP for a short period of time—about three or four hours.
This short period of time is a major drawback for the use of marijuana as a glaucoma treatment. Because glaucoma needs to be treated 24 hours a day, you would need to smoke marijuana six to eight times a day around the clock to receive the benefit of a consistently lowered IOP. Because of marijuana’s mood-altering effect, smoking so much of it daily would leave you too impaired to drive, operate equipment or function at the peak of your mental ability.
What we can tell you for sure is…
What is for certain is that if you are using marijuana to treat your glaucoma, you’re definitely going to want to seek out a life insurance company that is “marijuana friendly”. If this describes you, than just give us a call and we’ll be more than happy to help.

- Do you use any other prescription medications other than Alphagan P?
- Do you use any tobacco or nicotine products?
- Any immediate family history of cancer, stroke, heart disease, or diabetes?
- Do you have any issues with your driving record?
- Do you have any plans to travel outside the United States in the next 2 years?
- Do you participate in any dangerous recreational activities or hobbies?
