Typically, whenever we get a call from someone who is asking us about Risperdal, it’s because they’ve either already had their life insurance application denied or they are looking for coverage for a loved one and are worried that they won’t be able to find coverage for them.
Risperdal is one of those “types” of medications that can often times lead to an automatic decline once it is discovered on someone’s life insurance application. Mainly because Risperdal is primarily used to treat folks who suffer from schizophrenia.
Risperdal (risperidone) is an antipsychotic prescription medicine that is used to treat schizophrenia, and symptoms associated with bipolar disorder. It is believed that Risperdal works by changing the effects that certain chemicals will have in the brain.
Risperdal is can also be used to help autistic children who are suffering from symptoms of irritability.
So the obvious next question would be, whatcha got?
Now for the most part, if you’ve been diagnosed with schizophrenia or autism or if you looking to find coverage for someone who has been diagnosed with schizophrenia or autism, your options are going to be pretty limited.
Basically what you’re going to need to do is look for what is called a guaranteed issue life insurance policy that won’t ask any medical question or require a medical exam. Now while we do carry many of these types of policies and do help many of our clients purchase these types of policies, in general, where they’re may be “cognitive” issues of comprehension, we typically encourage clients to contact the individual insurance carriers directly so that they a complete understanding of the individual policy is assured.
That being said however…
We would encourage anyone considering purchasing a “guaranteed issue” life insurance policy for themselves or a loved one to first visit our article Top 10 Easiest Life Insurance Policies to Get so that they can learn more about who we feel offer some of the best guaranteed issue life insurance policies out there.
Now if you’re using your Risperderal….
To treat symptoms associated with bipolar disorder, it is theoretically possible that you will still be eligible for a traditional term or whole life insurance policy.
Theoretically possible but not easy.
What you will need to be able to do is demonstrate that your bi-polar condition is a “mild” case and that it is not significantly affecting your daily activities.
About bipolar disease:
Bipolar disease: also known as bipolar affective disorder, manic–depressive disorder, or manic depression, is a mental illness classified by psychiatrists as a mood disorder. Individuals with bipolar disorder experience episodes of a frenzied mood known as mania alternating with episodes of depressions. About 4% of people suffer from this disorder with an equal prevalence between men and women.
Likely questions you’ll be asked by the insurance companies in an effort to determine the severity of your condition will typically include:
- How old were you when you were first diagnosed with bi-polar disease?
- Who diagnosed you with bi-polar disease, a general practitioner or psychiatrist?
- Who prescribed your Risperdal, a general practitioner or psychiatrist?
- Has your prescription changed over the past 12 months?
- Are you using any other prescription medications to treat your bi-polar disease?
- Have you ever been hospitalized for your bi-polar disorder?
- How well has your condition been managed?
- Are you currently working now?
- In the past 12 months have you applied for or received any form of disability benefits?
Now we’re not going to sugar coat it, if you’ve been diagnosed with bi-polar disease, it’s going to be tough to qualify for a traditional term or whole life insurance policy.
