If you have had hives in the past, then you may be wondering how it will impact your life insurance eligibility. Will you still be able to get a whole or term life insurance policy at a preferred rate? Read on to find out just about everything you need to know about applying for life insurance with Uriticaria.
What is Urticaria?
Urticaria is just a fancy word for good ol’ fashioned hives. About 1 in 5 people have had hives at least once in their lives.
What triggers Urticaria?
Most of the time, hives are the result of allergies. This can be an allergy caused by many different things, including but not limited to:
- A specific food (common: nuts, eggs, corn, seafood, certain dyes in food)
- Stings or bites
- Latex (condoms, rubber gloves, etc)
- Pets (this is caused by their dandruff, not their fur!)
These are just a few things that could trigger urticaria.
As stated, urticaria means hives. Hives can show up in a specific part of your body (near exposure) or everywhere. They are pink or red bumps that come suddenly, and can disappear just as fast.
Nobody likes getting hives, the good news is that getting them shouldn’t really have a negative effect on your life insurance application. Even if you’re one of those people who seem to get hives all the time!
Hives really aren’t that big of a deal and aren’t life threatening. Sure, they are uncomfortable and they may require medical attention sometimes, at the end of the day, they’re not putting your life at risk which is why most life insurance companies aren’t going to be worried about them.
Now it’s also important to note…
That urticaria is not the same as angioedema. Angioedema is an allergic reaction that causes swelling of eyes, mouth, hands, and/or feet. People with angioedema can have a hard time breathing which makes it much more dangerous than uriticaria. It also makes angioedema a more serious risk factor to most potential life insurance carriers.
That being said however…
As a general “rule of thumb”, if you have had Urticaria then you don’t need to worry when applying for life insurance. You will still most likely qualify for a term or whole life insurance policy and may even qualify for a no medical exam life insurance policy as well – so long as all your other health issues check out!
So…If you are reasonably healthy and don’t live a dangerous life, then you shouldn’t have anything to worry about.
You may even get a preferred rate…
Despite your Urticaria. People with urticarial in their past can get a preferred rate so long as they do not:
- Have diabetes
- Have major health problems
- have any hospitalisations in the recent past
- live a dangerous lifestyle (hobbies, career, etc)
There are some other things that you will have to check out before saying for certain that you will get a preferred rate. But, we can say with certainty that it is entirely possible for someone who has had urticarial to qualify for a preferred rate.
Finding the best life insurance policy…
Isn’t only about urticarial. As you can see, life insurance companies do a lot to figure out and assess your risk.
When you apply for a life insurance policy you will have to:
- undergo a physical
- provide bloodwork
- provide urine sample
- disclose family medical history
- disclose lifestyle choices
Only after all this will a life insurance underwrite your policy.
If, for any reason, you think you will not do well in one or more category…
Then you can still consider a guaranteed issue life insurance policy. This kind of life insurance doesn’t offer as much coverage as a term or whole life policy, however, it’s still a great way to make sure your family doesn’t have to pay for your final expenses out of pocket.
If you do qualify for whole or term life insurance…
Remember, that not all life insurance companies are the same. They will judge every aspect of your medical life differently. Some life insurance companies see certain illnesses, medications, or treatments as riskier than others. All of this impacts the rate you pay.
