So, without further ado, let’s get to it and begin our discussion by first defining what scleroderma is…
Scleroderma is term used to describe a group of rare autoimmue rheumatic diseases that cause folks to suffer from a hardening and tightening of the skin and connective tissues.
Categorization: autoimmune disease
Symptoms of Scleroderma.
This depends on the type of scleroderma you have, but the main symptoms are the thickening of the skin.
Localized scleroderma is much less severe than systemic scleroderma. Mostly, it just impacts the skin.
Morphea is the first type of localized scleroderma. This can impact the blood vessels.
Linear is another type. Morphea may have more physically obvious symptoms like “thickened” skin on the face or arms.

Qualifying for Life Insurance with Scleroderma.
The main reason you’ve come to this article is to know if you will qualify for term or whole life insurance or not. Problem is, when it comes to underwriting applications for folks who have been diagnosed with scleroderma, it can really go either way.
Now if you…
Only suffer from localized or mild ccleroderma in “theory”, you should be able to qualify for a traditional term or whole life insurance policy. You may even be able to qualify for a preferred rate – supposing that all your medical stuff checks out and you don’t have a risky lifestyle.
But if you suffer from…
Generalized scleroderma you’re going to find that things are going to become a bit more difficult. You see, generalized scleroderma are cases where the affected areas are not restricted to any “one” area.
Complicate your application process. Individuals suffering from generalized scleroderma, will generally still be able to qualify for a traditional term or whole life insurance if it’s not very extreme severe case and aside from your scleroderma diagnosis you’re otherwise really healthy (i.e. you are a non-smoker and have absolutely no other health issues).
Rate: If you qualify with generalizes scleroderma the best rate you are going to get is Table D. Many will get Table H.
What if you’re denied a life insurance policy?
There are two things you can do if you are denied a policy with generalized scleroderma.
Apply for Guaranteed Issue Life Insurance.
If you are absolutely sure that there is no life insurance company that is going to underwrite a policy for you, then your best – and possibly last- bet is to get guaranteed issue life insurance.
The nice part…
About guaranteed life insurance policies is that just about anyone can qualify for them provide that you’re:
- A US citizen.
- You live in a state where they are offered.
- And you meet the minimum age requirements.
So even if you are lying on your deathbed you can still qualify for guaranteed issue as long as you meet those three requirements!
Of course, it comes with some drawbacks:
- Not as much coverage (lower death benefit),
- More expensive dollar per dollar,
- And they contain a graded death benefit!
The second option is to make sure that you really won’t qualify.
Is there a life insurance company that will offer you whole or term life?
The thing is that not every life insurance will view your particular case in the same light. One life insurance company may deny you whereas another might be willing to take a chance and underwrite a whole or term life insurance policy at a Table H rate.
Finding the Life Insurance Company that will underwrite it for you!
Unfortunately, we can’t just point you in the right direction in this article. If we could, we would!
But… the answer will vary from person to person. One company may deny you while another may deny your friend. Even if you both have scleroderma, there are a lot of things different about you, your scleroderma, and your lives.
The only way we can recommend a life insurance company to a person with scleroderma is if we get to know the person with scleroderma!
