Have you ever been diagnosed with phlebitis? If so, then you may be wondering if it is possible to get life insurance coverage? Here’s everything you need to know about getting a life insurance policy with phlebitis.
What is Phlebitis?
The suffix “-itis” basically means “inflammation”. You’ll see that suffix on the end of a lot of words. For example, pancreatitis is the inflammation of the pancreas. Phlebitis is the inflammation of the vein. You might be wondering why it’s not veinitis. Well, “phleb” is the Greek word for vein, and a lot of medical terminology comes from the Greeks!
The tricky part is…
That there are different “types” of phlebitis. And each type can “potentially” affect your life insurance application differently. So… let’s just take a moment and discuss the two main types of phlebitis one will generally encounter.
This is a specific type of phlebitis that is caused by blood clots within one’s veins. Blood clots can be very dangerous, even life threatening particularly when occurring in the ones’ larger veins.
Superficial phlebitis is a term used to describe cases where the phlebitis or swelling of one’s veins is limited to just “surface-level” veins. Superficial phlebitis isn’t usually dangerous at all but still deserves medical attention just to be sure.
What causes phlebitis?
Often times phlebitis is the result of surgery, but there are other causes such as a sedentary lifestyle, obesity, smoking and so on.
Applying for Life Insurance with Phlebitis.
When it comes to applying for life insurance after you’ve been diagnosed with phlebitis of any kind in the past, then the real questions are going to be:
- How long ago did you have phlebitis?
- What kind of phlebitis did you have?
- Are you okay now?
If it has been more than a year since you had phlebitis and now you are totally fine, then having been diagnosed with phlebitis in the past isn’t going to be a problem with most life insurance companies. Typically, they won’t think twice about insuring you!
Will it be possible to get a preferred rate?
You betcha! People who have had and overcome phlebitis will still “potentially” be eligible to qualify for preferred rates.
What do you need in order to get a preferred rate?
The first thing you should know about getting a preferred rate is that it’s not impossible. You don’t have to be an iron man or a triathlete to get a preferred rate. A lot of ordinary people get preferred rates. Basically, you just have to have:
- pretty good health
- not participate in any dangerous or semi-dangerous hobbies
- no dangerous habits (smoking, etc)
- a pretty decent family medical history
If you do, then you can probably qualify for a preferred rate on a life insurance policy.
Now if you had deep vein thrombophlebitis…
And you are still recovering or your recovery wasn’t all that long ago, then you’re probably not going to qualify for a preferred rate. It’s still likely that you can get a whole or term life insurance policy so long as you’re medically in the clear.
If you had any major complications…
Sometimes deep vein thrombosis leads to some major complications. If so, it’s going to be a bit harder for you to get the kind of life insurance policy you want, particularly if you have other medical issues as well. A combination of deep vein thrombosis and other illnesses and/or bad habits could, in the worst-case scenario, disqualify you from a term or whole life insurance policy.
Don’t give up yet!
If this is the case, you can still always qualify for a guaranteed issue life insurance policy. This is the way to go if you don’t qualify for term or whole life.
How do you know?
Explaining how life insurance companies assess your risk level and underwrite life insurance policies isn’t all that black and white. The reason for this is because every life insurance company has their own “system”. Some consider certain medical issues as big red flags, whereas others may be lax about it.
There are many things to consider…
In addition to the details of your phlebitis, you also need to factor in all your other health concerns, even if they are minor. Everything adds up and leads life insurance companies to their decision.
Why can’t you just tell me which life insurance company is best for Phlebitis?
Unfortunately, it doesn’t work like that. We could tell you, “If you have phlebitis but are 100% clear on every other issue in life, (insert name) is the best life insurance company is the best”. Unfortunately, almost no one has a clean slate aside from phlebitis. Other factors such as your:
- Height and weight,
- The state that you live in.
- The amount of insurance you’re looking for.
- The type of insurane you’re looking for.
- Etc, etc…
Can all play a role in determining which insurance company is going to be the “best” for you.
What if you do…
Even if you think you’ll pass every other section of the underwriting process with flying colors, there’s a good chance you’re forgetting something. Are you overlooking a past surgery or a medication you used to take? What about you blood pressure? All of these things factor in to the rate a life insurance company will offer…and each life insurance company’s rates fluctuate differently.
