Qualifying for Life Insurance with Otitis Media.

Are you interested in getting a life insurance policy but have or have had otitis media? Don’t worry; you still have a fair shot at qualifying for a traditional term or whole life insurance policy.

You’re going to want to read our article about applying for life insurance with otitis media prior to actually applying for life insurance coverage so that you’ll not only have a better idea about what the “process” of getting approved will look like, you’ll also have a pretty good idea on how you can save a few bucks!

Now in order…

To get an idea on what the process of applying for life insurance after being diagnosed with otitis media is going to look like, we first need to understand exactly what otitis media is.

So… What is Otitis Media?
First of all, there are a few types of otitis media, all of which are inflammation of the middle ear.  The good news is that regardless of what “type” of otitis media you have, most (if not all) life insurance companies are going to treat all “types” of otitis media pretty much the same.

If your doctor only told you that you suffer from an inner ear infection, don’t worry, that’s usually all we need to know.

Symptoms of Otitis Media

Symptoms will vary depending on the type of otitis media, but the most common is severe pain in the ear.

Qualifying for Life Insurance with Otitis Media

Most people who have otitis media recover without any long-term problems. If you fall in the majority, then you will have no problem getting life insurance – at least the problem won’t be otitis media! If you are healthy and don’t lead a risky life, then you might even qualify for a preferred rate.

However, life insurance companies may want a little more information:

The Cause of your otitis media.

Like with any kind of sickness, life insurance companies are interested in more than just the fact that you have or have had otitis media. They’re really interested in the cause of otitis media.

There are many things that can cause otitis, some of which are more serious than others. Some causes could be:

  • Allergies
  • Cigarette smoke (including second hand smoke)
  • Sinus infection
  • Respiratory Infection
  • Flu
  • Cold
  • Climate
  • Changes in altitude or climate
  • Air pollution

Some of these causes could put your preferred rate at risk. If smoking is the cause of your otitis media, for example, then you will probably have to get a smoker’s rate – that is, if the smoke causing your ear infection is your own!

Long-Term Problems.

In some cases, there is a chance that your ear infection may become something bigger, more long-term. Some of the possible problems could be:

  • Inflamed tonsils
  • Recurrent ear infections
  • Ruptured eardrum
  • A growth in the middle ear

If you have any of these issues, then your life insurance company will want to know. While these don’t typically impact your life insurance eligibility, they are still of concern to life insurance companies. You might not qualify for a preferred rate, but you could still be eligible for a great life insurance policy at a reasonable rate.

But wait…

There’s a lot more to life insurance than just ear infections and their complications. Before a life insurance company underwrites your policy, they will want to know a whole lot more. If you apply for a term or whole life insurance policy you will almost certainly have to:

  • Have a medical exam
  • Do some blood work
  • Provide a urine sample
  • Weigh & measure yourself (no cheating!)

After this, they will also ask you questions related to:

  • Family medical history
  • Your medical history
  • Prescription drugs you’ve taken
  • Lifestyle choices (hobbies, travel, career)
  • Past surgeries or hospitalizations

Then after analyzing your test results and answers for all of these, they will decide what kind of policy you qualify for and at what rate.

Here’s the tricky thing.

Even though most life insurance companies ask the same things, doesn’t mean they weigh your answers in the same ways. Some life insurance companies will penalize you for those inflamed tonsils or recurrent ear infections, but others will see them as no big deal. One life insurance company might be really hung up on your prescription medications whereas another doesn’t see any problem with it.
