While we don’t get a ton of calls from clients asking us if they’ll be eligible for a traditional term or whole life insurance policy after being diagnosed with a pre-existing medical condition like Kaposi’s sarcoma, it has happened enough that we figured we’d write this article so that we can “shed” some light on what the process of applying for life insurance with a condition like Kaposi’s sarcoma will look like.
As well as provide some helpful insight on what options may be available to someone who is currently suffering from this condition.
Now it’s important to…
Understand that when it comes to discussing Kaposi’s sarcoma, patients are generally going to fall into one of two different categories. Those that are related to having been exposed to the HIV virus and those that have not.
Now since non-HIV related Kaposi’s sarcoma is a very rare condition, it’s difficult for us to make any “broad assumptions” with regards to how an individual life insurance underwriter may “view” an individual’s life insurance application after being diagnosed with non-HIV Kaposi’s sarcoma.
For this reason…
In this article, we’re going to focus all of our attention on those who have been diagnosed with HIV-related Kaposi’s sarcoma and simply ask those who have been diagnosed with non-HIV Kaposi’s sarcoma to give us a call for more information. So, with that being said, let’s now turn our attention to those who have actually been diagnosed with HIV-related Kaposi’s sarcoma.
HIV-related Kaposi’s Sarcoma.
Regardless of why, you’ve contracted Kaposi’s sarcoma, the actual condition will be very similar in that Kaposi’s sarcoma is a type of cancer that causes tumors to develop from small blood vessels located just below the surface of the skin.
These tumors will most frequently develop in areas around the mouth, nose eyes and skin, but can also spread to one’s lungs, liver, stomach, intestines and lymph nodes.
It is believed…
That Kaposi’s sarcoma is caused by the herpes HHV-8 virus (or KSHV), which in individuals with a compromised immune system is able to develop into certain cancers including Kaposi’s sarcoma.
Now as we…
Mentioned before, we don’t often have folks ask us if they can qualify for a traditional term or whole life insurance policy after they’ve been diagnosed with Kaposi’s sarcoma because usually, people are going to be more concerned about their HIV or AIDs diagnosis for obvious reasons!
Now the good news…
Is that with the continued developments of HIV suppressant medications, HIV has slowly evolved itself from a terminal illness to a now “chronic” somewhat manageable disease. So much so that several life insurance companies are now beginning to “reconsider” their underwriting guidelines when it comes to considering insuring someone that has been diagnosed with HIV.
That said however…
These “re-considerations” are reserved for those with EXTREMELY well “managed” HIV and not for those who are experiencing any active symptoms of their disease including those who are suffering from Kaposi’s sarcoma.
Which means that…
If you have been diagnosed with HIV and are suffering from Kaposi’s sarcoma, we are not aware of any life insurance company that will insure you for a traditional term or whole life insurance policy.
As a result…
If you have been diagnosed with HIV related Kaposi’s sarcoma, you’re going to need to pursue an “alternative” life insurance product if you wish to have any chance of being approved for coverage.
The two products that we offer here at TermLife2Go which could “potentially” be a good fit for you would include an Accidental Death Policy which would insure you in the event that you died from an accidental death such as: motor vehicle accident, victim of crime, slip and fall, or natural disaster. Or a Guaranteed Life Insurance policy.
Now in this article…
We’re not going to discuss Accidental Death Policies (even though we feel that they have “value” in certain situations), because most of our clients are looking for “LIFE” insurance policies not “ACCIDENT” insurance policies.
So, if you would like to learn more about accidental death insurance products feel free to check out this article: Accidental Death Insurance, Pros-Cons or simply give us a call.
With that said, let’s now turn our attention to Guaranteed Life Insurance Policies.
Guaranteed Issue Life Insurance Policies.
Guaranteed issue life insurance life policies are life insurance policies that do not consider one’s heath during the underwriting process. Which means that it doesn’t matter how healthy or unhealthy you are when applying.
There really are only three things that are going to matter when it comes time to purchasing a guaranteed issue life insurance policy:
- Are you a US citizen?
- Do you live in a state where guaranteed issue life insurance policies are offered?
- And do you meet the minimum age requirements for applying?
If you meet these three criteria, you should “theoretically” be eligible.
But just because…
You can purchase a guaranteed issue life insurance policy doesn’t mean that you should purchase a guaranteed issue life insurance policy. You see, these “types” of life insurance policies will have their potential disadvantages that you should be aware which include:
- Low policy limits.
- A “bit” pricey for the amount of coverage being purchased.
- And guaranteed issue life insurance policies will contain a graded death benefit which will place limitations on when your life insurance policy will begin covering your for “natural” causes of death.
Now we know…
