Researcher & Writer
August 06, 2017

Guillain-Barre syndrome is one of those unusual medical conditions which one would ordinarily assume would automatically be disqualified from being able to qualify for a traditional term or whole life insurance policy.

But the truth is…

While being diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome will certainly “complicate” one’s life insurance application, it shouldn’t necessarily prevent one from be able to qualify for a traditional policy.  In fact, you may even be able to qualify for a Preferred rate class!

Now why is this so surprising?

We’ll let’s first take a moment and define exactly what Guillain-Barre syndrome is so that we can get a better idea about what factors concerning Guillain-Barre syndrome may come into play during your life insurance application.

Guillain-Barre syndrome defined:

Guillain-Barre syndrome is a rare autoimmune disease whereby one’s own body begins attacking its own nervous system.  Now, the “jury” is still out on the actual cause of Guillain-Barre syndrome, but it is believed that it may be triggered by an acute bacterial or viral infection.

Common symptoms.

Common symptoms associated with Guillain-Barre syndrome will include:

  • Muscle weakness,
  • Painful tingling in the hands and feet,

Treatment options:

Treatment options for those suffering from Guillain-Barre syndrome will usually consist of blood transfusion treatments as well as physical therapy to help minimize one’s symptoms.

The good news is that according to Sharecare, less that 1% of people suffering from Guillain-Barre syndrome will experience any symptoms provided that they begin receiving their treatment early and even less than that will actually go on to die due to their condition.

Which means…

That as far as a most life insurance companies are concerned, Guillain-Barre syndrome is NOT going to be a major concern during the underwriting process.

Note: This is usually the time that we here at TermLIfe2Go like to remind our readers that we’re not doctors, nor are we medical professionals.  We’re just a bunch of life insurance agents!

And now with that being said…

Let’s get back to what we’re good at… Helping folks qualify for life insurance after they’ve been diagnosed with a pre-existing medical condition like Guillain-Barre syndrome.

Qualifying for life insurance with Guillain-Barre syndrome.

At the end of the day, knowing what “type” of life insurance policy you’ll be able to qualify for and what “price” you’ll need to pay will all come down to how “well” you Guillain-Barre syndrome is being managed.

And as we mentioned before…

For the vast majority of individuals who are able to diagnosis and treat their condition early on, few if any symptoms should be present.  This is why most life insurance companies are going to want to know:

  • When were you first diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome?
  • How did you learn discover you had Guillain-Barre syndrome?
  • What symptoms have you experienced as a result of your Guillain-Barre syndrome?
  • Are you currently treating your condition, or have you gone into remission?
  • How often do you visit your primary care physician?
  • Have you been previously been exposed to any of the following risk factors that may have contributed to you developing Guillain-Barre syndrome:
    • Campylobacter bacteria,
    • Influenza virus,
    • Epstein-Barr virus,
    • HIV,
    • Mycoplasma pheumonia,
    • Surgery,
    • Hodgkin’s lymphoma,

From here, the insurance companies will generally have a pretty good idea about what types of life insurance policies you may be eligible for and and what price.

As a general rule of thumb, what you’re typically going to find is that if you’re not really suffering from any symptoms due to your condition and you’re currently in remission, you should “theoretically” be eligible for a Standard or better rate on your life insurance policy.  And in some cases, you may even be eligible for a Preferred rate.

If you’re currently experiencing symptoms due to your Guillain-Barre syndrome or your Guillain-Barre syndrome was triggered by some type of “serious” underlying condition like HIV exposure, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, or a surgical procedure, chances are the “underlying” condition is going to be the ultimate determining factor on the outcome of your life insurance application, with your Guillain-Barre diagnosis taking a “back seat”.
