Want to make a life insurance agent nervous?
Just tell that that you suffer from chest pains.
Want to watch them relax?
Just tell them that its cause by your costochondritis!
While it is true that costochondritis will cause someone to suffer from chest pain, that pain is not going to be related to any heart or gastrointestinal (GERD) conditions. Which means that it’s generally not going to play a huge role in the outcome of your life insurance application.
Costochondritis, also known as chest wall pain, costosternal syndrome, or costosternal chondodynia, and is an acute and often temporary inflammation of the costal cartilage which is the cartilage that connects each rib to the sternum at what is called the costosternal joint.
We would be willing to bet that most people have no idea what costochondritis is, it’s not that uncommon of a condition in the United States. In fact, over 200,000 people each and every year will be diagnosed with costochondritis you just wouldn’t know it because most people just call it chest pain!
Those suffering from costochondritis will generally experience chest pain and a tenderness on the breastbone that may radiate to ones’ ribs or ones’ back. It is also more common to experience costochondritis pains on the left side of the body than it is on the right.
Causes and treatment options.
In most cases the cause of ones’ costochondritis will remain unknown, there are however, cases that can develop due to physical trauma, muscle strain, or an upper respiratory infection.
In cases that are caused by an upper respiratory infection, medications may be prescribed to help treat the infection but other than that, the only medications that you generally see prescribed to treat costochondritis will be limited to a pain management role.
The good news is that most cases of costochondritis will take care of themselves and generally heal pretty quickly.
Costochondritis and Life Insurance.
When it comes time to actually applying for life insurance after you’ve diagnosed with costochondritis, the only major concern you may run into is if your costochondritis was caused by some type of significant trauma that you may be still experiencing other complications from, or if your costochondritis is the result of an ongoing respiratory infection.
In cases like these, the life insurance companies will want to see that these issues have resolved themselves prior to accepting your life insurance application.
That being said however…
If your costochondritis is complete resolved and you are no longer suffering from any related symptoms, you’re generally going to find that most life insurance companies will still consider you eligible for a Preferred rate class, assuming that you would otherwise be eligible.
Which is great….!
Because what this means is that only will you be eligible for a traditional term or whole life insurance policy that will require you to take a medical exam, you’ll also may be eligible for what is called a simplified issue life insurance policy as well.
Advantages of a Simplified Issue life insurance policy.
Simplified issue term or whole life insurance policies are very similar to traditional term or whole life insurance policies with one major exception, simplified issue life insurance policies will generally not require you to take a medical exam in order to qualify.
Instead, simplified issue life insurance policies, will simply rely on information collected from:
- Your life insurance application.
- A prescription database check.
- A DMV database check
- And a criminal background check.
In order to make a decision about whether or not to approve you for coverage.
(It’s important to note that traditional life insurance policies will also look at these same reports in addition to requiring a medical exam and in some cases, order actual medical records from your doctor).
That being said however…
Simplified issue life insurance policies are not for everyone. These types life insurance policies should generally be reserved for “healthier” life insurance applicants or ones without a complicated medical history.
This is because, most simplified issue life insurance policies, in addition to not requiring one to take a medical exam will often not request medical records from your primary doctor, which means that underwriters reviewing your simplified issue life insurance application will have less information to base their decision on.
As a result, this can make it more difficult for those with a “complicated” medical history to be approved for these types of life insurance policies.
