Qualifying for life insurance after being diagnosed with Coccidioidomycosis.

If you live in the southwestern United States, you may have found yourself wondering why…

“If we’re always being told to conserve water, why is it that construction sites frequently have a water truck driving around spraying the dirt?”

And the answer to that question is not because construction companies like to stay clean and dust free, it’s because of a “sneaky” little fungus called coccidioides that lives in the dirt, that when inhaled can cause one to develop coccidioidomycosis.

Coccidioidomycosis.

Coccidioidomycosis, or valley fever, as it is sometimes referred to is a fungal infection that is caused by the coccidiodes fungus that is found in soil.  Most people who develop coccidioidomycosis won’t have any symptoms associated with it however, some may develop flu like symptoms that are sometimes followed by chest pain and a persistent cough.

Severe cases of coccidioidomycosis can also lead one to develop:

  • Meningitis.
  • Severe headaches.
  • Fevers.
  • And even altered mental states.

Particularly in those who may have a compromised immune system.

Treatments options.

In general, mild cases of coccidioidomycosis will typically clear up on their own and will not usually require treatment.  However, in more moderate to severe cases, individuals may be prescribed an antifungal medication to help combat the infection or even require surgery to remove any infected tissue that is deemed too damaged to recover on its own or through medication.

Coccidioidomycosis and life insurance approvals.

When it comes to how a life insurance underwriter is going to “rate” a life insurance application from someone who has been diagnosed with coccidioidomycosis in the past, what you’re generally going to find is that the first thing that the insurance underwriter is going to ask is:

“When where you diagnosed with coccidioidomycosis?”

This is because insurance companies aren’t going to be all that interested insuring someone with a current, “active” infection.

Then assuming that…

You’ve already recovered from your coccidioidomycosis infection, the next thing that the insurance underwriter is going to want to know about is:

“Did you require any surgical treatment for you condition?  And was your coccidioidomycosis infection contained to your respiratory system or did it disseminate to other parts of your body?

As a general rule of thumb…

What you’re typically going to find is that most individuals who have been diagnosed with coccidioidomycosis will be eligible for a traditional term or whole life insurance policy.

Those with mild cases that didn’t require any surgical procedures will generally have the greatest opportunity to qualify for a Preferred rate class (assuming they would otherwise be able to qualify).  Those that did require some type of surgical proceed will still usually qualify for a traditional life insurance policy, only now they may have a more difficult time qualifying for a “Preferred” rate.

Lastly…

Those who suffered from a systemic coccidioidomycotic infection, being able to qualify for a traditional life insurance policy simply won’t be an option (in most cases).

These individuals, they will either need to simply go without any life insurance or will need to purse an “alternative” life insurance product like a guaranteed issue life insurance policy which will not require an applicant to take a medical exam or answer any health-related questions in order to qualify.

 The good news is that…

We here at TermLife2Go, offer both traditional life insurance products as well as alternative ones so that regardless of how severe your coccidioidomycosis infection was, we should “theoretically” have a qualify life insurance policy that you can qualify for!

Additionally, because we are an independent life insurance brokerage that works with dozens of different life insurance companies, we should also be able to help you “shop” rates from multiple insurance companies so that you can be more “certain” that you are getting a great deal on your life insurance policy!
