Qualifying for Life Insurance After Being Diagnosed with Chondrocalcinosis or Arthopathy.

From time to time we get calls from folks who have been diagnosed with chondrocalcinosis and now are wondering what effect in any, this diagnosis may have on their life insurance application.

And this is a completely normal…

Question one might have, after all, once an individual has been diagnosed with a pre-existing medical condition, it is theoretically possible that this condition may have an influence on the outcome of their life insurance application.  So, without further ado, let’s dive right into it, by first taking a look at exactly what chondrocalcinosis is!

What is chondrocalcinosis?

Chondrocalcinosis is a rheumatologic disorder that goes by many names including:

  • Calcium pyrophosphate dehydrate crystal deposition disease.
  • Pseudogout
  • And pyrophosphate arthopathy are the most common.

And is caused by calcium pyrophosphate collecting in the ones’ connective tissue, and is most frequently seen in ones’ knees.

Symptoms of chondrocalcinosis?

Chondrocalcinosis is a disease that is very similar to arthritis in that it will cause pain in the joints wherever the crystals are present.

Often times, people with chondrocalcinosis have other problems such as:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Milwaukee shoulder syndrome
  • High white blood count
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Hemochromatosis
  • Hypophosphatemia
  • Renal osteodystrophy
  • Wilson’s disease
  • Osteoarthritis

Basically, chondrocalcinosis will cause or be associated with other problems of the joints.

Treatment options for chondrocalcinosis.

Unfortunately, there is no known cure for chondrocalcinosis, however, there are medications that can be used to help minimize the symptoms associated with the disease in severe cases.

The good news is that most people will be able to live a normal and productive life in spite of being diagnosed with chondrocalcinosis and in many cases won’t require taking any prescription medications at all.

In extreme cases, however, individuals may elect to have their joints “drained” in an effort to extract the crystals and excess fluid buildup in the affected joints, but even in cases like these, the procedure is pretty routine and should not raise any “red” flags when it comes time to applying for a traditional term or whole life insurance policy.

Will chondrocalcinosis hurt my chances of Life insurance?

Not necessarily, after all, chondrocalcinosis is not life threatening. Normally, the diseases that really take a toll on your chances of getting a life insurance policy are those that will cause premature death.

Now…since this is not the case with chondrocalcinosis, you should “theoretically” still be eligible for a Preferred or Preferred Plus rate class despite your diagnosis.

That being said however…

If your chondrocalcinosis has become so server that its affecting your ability to perform routine daily activities or has required you to apply for some type of disability benefit, it is possible that your chondrocalcinosis could potentially affect what types of life insurance policies you will be eligible for as well as what price you may need to pay for that coverage.

If you have some moderate to severe health issue, consider simplified issue life insurance, where there is no exam required.

Additionally, if you have a more serious health issue, it may be that your only option is guaranteed issue life insurance.

That is because…

Being approved for life insurance isn’t going to solely center around you chondrocalcinosis diagnosis.  In fact, it may actually only play a very minor role if any.

But there are other factors that may come into play which will also need to be considered such as:

  • Your age.
  • Your current height and weight.
  • Have you been diagnosed with any other medical conditions?
  • Have you ever suffered from a heart attack, stroke or cancer?
  • Are you taking any prescription medications right now?
  • Do you smoke or use any type of tobacco or nicotine products?
  • Do you have any issues with your driver’s license such as a suspended license, multiple moving violations or a DUI?
  • Have you ever been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor?
  • In the past 12 months, have you filed for or declared bankruptcy?
  • Do you have any set plans to travel outside the United States in the next 2 years?
  • Do you actively participate in any dangerous hobbies like hang gliding, bungee jumping or sky diving?
  • Are you currently working now?
  • In the past 12 months, have you applied for or received any form of disability benefits?

These are some of the things life insurance companies are likely to ask when you apply for a life insurance policy. So really, whether or not you have had chondrocalcisnosis is just a very small part of qualifying for a life insurance policy.
