Qualifying for life Insurance after a Pulmonary Infarction

Researcher & Writer
August 11, 2017

Anyone with any kind of health problem may know that getting approved for life insurance at a great rate can be difficult. But are all health problems the same? If you have a problem like pulmonary infarction but want life insurance, then you’ve come to the right place! We’re here to help you learn everything you need to know about applying for life insurance with pulmonary infarction.

What is Pulmonary Infarction?

An infarction is when something is blocking the blood supply to an organ. In the case of pulmonary infarction this “blockage” is causing blood to be “blocked” from getting to the heart. Usually, this is an embolism.

Symptoms of Pulmonary Infarction.

There are many different symptoms, but the most common will include:

  • Getting out of breath easily
  • Coughing, sometimes with blood
  • Pain in the chest – may even feel like a heart attack
  • Fever and symptoms that accompany that
  • Pain in one or both legs
  • Dizziness

Why did you get a pulmonary infarction?

Life insurance companies will want to know what caused your pulmonary infarction before they issue you a life insurance policy.  The cause and risk factors may be equally important.

  • Smokers are more likely to get a pulmonary infarction (and have higher life insurance rates!)
  • People with a history of heart disease or cancer may get pulmonary infarctions
  • Blood clots
  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy

These factors will also influence a life insurance company’s decision to underwrite your policy and at what rate.

Getting Life Insurance with Pulmonary Infraction: is it possible?
Despite the fact that a pulmonary infarction can be very dangerous, it’s still possible to get life insurance.  In fact, you may even be able to qualify for a no medical exam life insurance policy as well!

Making a full recovery.

To get life insurance – and at the best rate possible – it is important to apply when you have fully recovered from your pulmonary infraction. If you have any residual effects then you may not qualify for life insurance. Instead, you may even be rejected altogether, depending on what’s happening with your health now, and the reason for your pulmonary infarction.

If you have not made a full recovery…

It is still possible to get life insurance…but you may not be able to qualify for a traditional term or whole life insurance policy right away.

You may need to consider a guaranteed issue life insurance policy simply because these “types” of life insurance policies will not require you to take a medical exam or answer any health-related questions.

Which means that…

Even if you haven’t fully recovered from your pulmonary infraction or you’re still exhibiting symptoms related to your pulmonary infraction, you should still be eligible for a guaranteed issue life insurance policy provided that they are available in your state and you meet the minimum age requirement.

Additional factors that may come into play.

Applicants should be aware that even if you have made a full recovery from your pulmonary infraction, you don’t want to get too excited right away! There are a lot of things that life insurance companies consider besides just pulmonary infarction. The list goes on and on, but their main objective is to figure out if you have anything that’s really going to cause you to potentially have a shortened life span.

Risk factors that you should be aware of include:

  • Diabetes
  • Heart conditions
  • Cancer (even if recovered)
  • Major surgeries in the last twelve months
  • Prescription medications
  • History of depression or bipolar disease
  • HIV or Hepatitis
  • Plans to travel to conflict or war zones
  • Dangerous careers (police officer, construction, roofing, factory, etc)
  • Dangerous hobbies (jumping out of planes or off cliffs, sailing, deep sea diving, etc)
  • Dangerous driving (i.e. your driving record!)

This is a very short list of things that could possibly make a life insurance company decline you or at the very least disqualify you from getting a preferred life insurance rate.

Process of getting approved for a traditional term or whole life insurance policy.

In order to get term or whole life insurance you will likely have to:

  • Undergo a medical exam
  • Provide your medical history
  • Give a urine sample
  • Do bloodwork

This all helps a life insurance company to determine your risk levels. Your pulmonary infarction is just the beginning of the things a life insurance company wants to know about!

Getting life insurance with pulmonary infarction and other medical issues.

When you go to apply for a life insurance policy, you may be surprised by how many questions your life insurance agent may ask you.  This is because, insurance companies are going to want to know a lot about your current health before they will be willing to take you on as a client.

It’s important to note that not all life insurance companies are going to follow the same underwriting guidelines.  Which means that while one life insurance company may not care about your pulmonary infarction, another one might care a lot. And the same one that cares about your pulmonary infarction may not care at all that you have taken some prescription medications. But the life insurance company that didn’t care about your pulmonary infarction might be highly suspect of those medications!

It’s all very confusing…
