Purchasing Life Insurance after Cerebrospinal Meningitis.

Once in a while we get calls from people who have or know someone who has cerebrospinal meningitis and wants to see if they can still qualify for life insurance with a pre-existing condition.

And one thing that we can say for sure is…

Whenever a person has a complicated illness, qualifying for life insurance with pre-existing conditions is going to become complicated.  But hey, not everyone is going to fit into that “Cookie Cutter” image that you see advertised on those life insurance commercials so often, sometimes, qualifying for life insurance can be tough!  But that’s what we’re here for so…

“Don’t worry about a thing, we’ve got this!”

Getting Life Insurance with Cerebrospinal Meningitis

Cerebrospinal meningitis can be quite serious, but this doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to qualify for a quality life insurance policy, it just means that you probably won’t be able to qualify for a traditional term or whole life insurance policy while you’re actively fighting your infection!

In fact, no exam life insurance is probably not going to be available either. Your best bet is guaranteed issue life insurance where there are no health questions or health exams required.

But shortly after you’ve recovered , not only will you be eligible for more traditional coverage, you may even be able to qualify for a Preferred rate!

What is Cerebrospinal Meningitis?

This is an inflammation around the brain and spinal cord. Because these are two very important parts of the body, it is a worrisome illness. But don’t worry; many people who contract meningitis will make a full recovery.

There are different types of meningitis: bacterial meningitis and viral meningitis. Bacterial normally happens suddenly whereas viral meningitis may take longer to develop. With viral meningitis you may feel the onset of symptoms slowly, over a period of time.

Symptoms of Cerebrospinal Meningitis

Both types of meningitis have similar symptoms. Symptoms vary, but most people have a headache and a stiff neck. Other symptoms may include:

  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Foggy thinking/ overall confusion/ forgetfulness
  • Fever
  • Body pain and ache
  • Dizziness

How is meningitis treated?

Treatment will depend on the type of meningitis you have. Viral meningitis may only require home care such as:

  • Drinking a lot of fluids
  • Basic over-the-counter pain relief medication
  • Rest and relaxation

Essentially, the same kind of stuff you would do if you had the flu or another kind of viral infection. If the viral infection doesn’t seem to get better, then your doctor may require you to be hospitalized.

Bacterial meningitis may require more intense treatment, even hospitalization.

Can someone die from meningitis?

You’ve probably heard the horror stories of meningitis long before you read this article, and long before you contracted the disease yourself. So yes, it is true that some individuals can die from meningitis but it’s not as common as you may think.

People who die from meningitis typically have compromised immune systems to begin with or have left their illness untreated.

Will I be able to qualify for insurance with history of having meningitis?

As you can see, it’s not impossible to qualify for life insurance coverage with meningitis in your medical records, especially if you don’t currently suffer from any complications.

So, if you only underwent home treatment, and you didn’t need to be hospitalized, there is a really good chance that not only will you be able to qualify for life insurance, you may even be able to “earn” a Preferred rate!

Severe cases of meningitis however…

May find it much more difficult to qualify for a traditional term or whole life insurance policy.  These types of cases are the “rare” ones where folks may end up suffering from long term affects due to damage done by their meningitis.

Some of the long-term effects of meningitis may include:

  • Epilepsy/ seizures
  • Kidney problems, possible failure
  • Bone & joint problems
  • And more

In cases like these, the ultimate decision based on whether you can qualify for a traditional term or whole life insurance policy will ultimately rest with then underwriter working for the insurance company, and will usually depend on the results from your medical exam and any documentation provided by your doctor.  In some cases, these clients may not be eligible for traditional coverage which is when either a guaranteed issue or simplified issue life insurance policy may be a possible option to consider.

Other factors that will come into play in determining if you can qualify will include:

  • You current age?
  • Your height, and weight?
  • Existence of any other pre-existing medical conditions?
  • Any history of suffering from a stroke, heart attack, cancer or diabetes?
  • Current prescription medication usage?
  • Current tobacco or nicotine use?
  • Marijuana use?
  • History of alcoholism?
  • Driving record – have you ever had a DUI?
  • Future travel plans: dangerous countries including North Korea, Syria, Iraq, or other high-risk areas.
  • Dangerous hobbies such as adventure sports.
  • Psychological health – do you have depression or any other mental issues?
  • Current job/ employment status
  • Have you applied for or received disability benefits in the last 12 months?

Applying for life insurance: how to get the best life insurance policy.

As you can see, having a pre-exiting history of meningitis, is only going to be one of many factors that an insurance company is look at in determining what “type” of life insurance policy you may or may not be eligible for as well as what “rate” you may be required to pay.

This is why it’s so important to review all of your options before committing yourself to applying for coverage with any ONE company.
