We’ll frequently get calls from folks who are taking Pepcid AC (famotidine), Tagamet and Prilosec (Omeprazole) and are wondering if its use will have an effect on their life insurance application and the truth is that in the vast majority of cases that are using Pepcid AC are simply using it to treat routine heart burn or GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) so its use isn’t going to play an important role in the outcome of their life insurance application.
Which means that these clients will still have a great opportunity to qualify for a Preferred or Preferred Plus rate class!
The problem is…
Pepcid AC (famotidine), Tagamet and Prilosec (Omeprazole) isn’t always used to “just” treat folks who are suffering mild cases of heart burn or GERD.
Pepcid AC Tagemet (cimetidine) or Prilosec can also be used to treat and promote the healing of erosive esophagitis and prevent gastric ulcers caused by infection with helicobacter pylori. Additionally, in rare cases, Pepcid AC can also be used to treat more serious conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
So whatcha got?
For those that are simply using their Pepcid AC or Prilosec to treat the occasional bout of heartburn, you’re generally going to find that your Pepcid AC isn’t going be a factor in the outcome of your life insurance application.
So don’t be surprised if your life insurance agent doesn’t spend much time talking about it, it’s simply not going to be an issue.
Now when it comes to finding coverage for folks who have been diagnosed with some type of stomach ulcer, the type and severity of the ulcer that we’re talking about will certainly come into play.
Can someone with stomach ulcers get approved for life insurance?
Absolutely, however insurance companies will want to know:
- What medications you’re currently using to treat your ulcers?
- At what age where you when you were first diagnosed with an ulcer?
- Do you have any gastrointestinal bleeding?
- And finally what is the current state of the ulcer? Healing? Staying the same? Or worsening?
The answers to these questions, and others like it, will ultimately decide whether or not the insurance company will be willing to extend an offer of coverage to you and at what rate.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is defined as chronic heartburn that ultimately causes enough damage to the lining of your esophagus to “earn” its own diagnosis beyond that of occasional heartburn.
For folks suffering from GERD, it’s still quite possible to qualify for a Preferred or Preferred Plus rate class, you’ll just need to demonstrate that your current medication is working well to minimize any damage to the esophagus, and that your condition is not worsening.
Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome is another medical condition caused by the over production of gastric acid. However, in this case, the over production of gastric acid is due to hyperplasia or tumors of the islets cells in the pancreas.
For folks currently suffering from Zolleinger-Ellison Syndrome, since traditional term and whole life insurance coverage is generally not an option, we generally recommend that our clients consider buying a final expense whole life policy where there is no health questions or medical exam required.
