If you have had a TIA then you need to read this. Three important questions you need to ask when considering high risk life insurance after a TIA are:
- Can I get life insurance after a transient ischemic attack?
- What will insurance cost after a transient ischemic attack (TIA)?
- What is the process?
Let’s begin with a brief overview.
A transient ischemic attack occurs when blood flow to the brain stops for a period of time. A TIA is typically an early warning of something more serious, such as a full blown stroke. Most of the time a TIA is due to a portion of plaque buildup dislodging from an area, then moving along until it eventually blocks blood flow in one of the arteries supplying the brain. Often, low density lipoprotein (LDL), i.e. “bad cholesterol”, is the main culprit. This is a great reason to keep a watchful eye on your diet and seek out whole foods with a high level of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), i.e. “good cholesterol”.
Can I get life insurance after a TIA?
The quick answer is, YES.
Ultimately, approval will depend on the changes in your lifestyle made after you had a TIA.
Some questions the best life insurance companies for TIA clients ask are:
- What is a stroke or TIA
- How long ago
- How many occurrences
- Are you taking blood thinners
The farther away you get from your transient ischemic attack the better your chances are of getting life insurance.
What is the cost?
Getting life insurance after a transient ischemic attack shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg. Life insurance companies have about 16 different rate classes. What rate class you qualify for and your choice from among the different types of life insurance will determine your cost for life insurance.
If it has been 10 years or more since your TIA, and you are on no prescription medications, and your cholesterol levels and blood pressure are well controlled with no medication, then you may be able to get a preferred rate class. This is not the norm so you would be the exception. However, it is not out of the realm of possibility.
Most likely though, you will be offered a standard rate class. Once again, the farther you are away from your attack, the better off you are.

What is the process?
For those more fortunate, fully underwritten coverage is available. This type of policy requires a medical exam. The examiner typically comes to your home and checks your height and weight and takes a small blood and urine sample. Your lab results are then processed. The carrier will request physician statements and look into your medical records.
The carrier will also do a prescription database check to see what medications you are currently taking and have taken in the past. An underwriter will then assess your “risk” level and give you a rate class assigned to your specific risk. Your assigned agent at TermLife2Go will then follow up with you and let you know of your approval.
The entire process is handled by us so you can just sit back and wait for the life insurance carrier to complete your file. Speaking of life insurance carriers, not all life insurance carriers are the same!
Not all life insurance carriers are the same
The life insurance industry is just like every other industry out there. Competition is constantly driving insurance carriers to compete for your business. As a result, carriers take on “niches” in an effort to earn market share. It is important to know these niches and it is important the agency you chose has the freedom to choose from multiple life insurance carriers.
As a consumer, it is in your best interest to work with an agency that is not bound to any one carrier and will be able to shop your application to dozens of the best life insurance companies, including the best no medical exam companies available. Only by doing this can you insure that you are getting the best policy tailored to your specific needs.
By working directly with TermLife2Go you will have an assigned agent dedicated to your application. This agent will be available to you throughout the entire application process; he or she will provide you with status updates as your application goes through underwriting and will also review your application at time of approval to ensure that you are still getting the best deal out there!
