Mallory –Weiss Syndrome is one of those rare diseases that we don’t encounter too often, but when we do, we always know that it is going to significantly complicate ones’ life insurance application.
Being diagnosed with Mallory-Weiss Syndrome will often make it impossible for us to accurately provide a life insurance quote without knowing much more about your pre-existing medical condition first.
Questions such as:
- When were you first diagnosed with Mallory-Weiss syndrome?
- Are you currently treating your Mallory-Weiss syndrome?
- And what has caused you to develop Mallory-Weiss syndrome?
Will all play an important role in determining what “type” of life insurance policy you can qualify for as well as what “health class” you may receive.
About Mallory-Weiss Syndrome
This is a disorder which is primarily about upper gastrointestinal bleeding. How does it happen? Usually, it is the result of persistent vomiting that causes a tear in your mucosa. This persistent vomiting is often the result of binge drinking or bulimia, but could be due to something else like chemotherapy or acute illness.
Symptoms associated with Mallory-Weiss Syndrome.
If you have Mallory-Weiss Syndrome the most common symptoms will include:
- Abdominal pain, often considered “severe”
- Continual vomiting
- Blood in vomit (hematemesis)
- Blood or dark feces
These are the most common symptoms people with a Mallory-Weiss syndrome will face.
Treatment for Mallory-Weiss Syndrome
If you undergo an esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) and your doctor determines you do have Mallory-Weiss Syndrome, then you may likely need surgery.
In some cases, the tear can heal itself and the bleeding will stop on its own without surgery. However, in case you do need surgery, it will probably include coagulation to seal the vessels or injection therapy to do the same thing.
Can I take medication with Mallory-Weiss Syndrome?
The main problem with Mallory-Weiss is the tear itself, and there is no medicine to heal a Mallory-Weiss tear. However, you may be prescribed medicine to make you less nauseous, and to reduce stomach acids, but these medications will only help lessen the symptoms surrounding your condition and will do little to nothing to actually cure the main underlying cause.
Getting Life Insurance with Mallory-Weiss Syndrome
When it comes to qualifying for a traditional term or whole life insurance policy for those who have been diagnosed with Mallory-Weiss Syndrome what you’ll generally find is that if you’ve had your syndrome repaired and are no longer showing signs of a new “potential” flare up, qualifying for a traditional term or whole life insurance policy should be possible.
Now it’s possible that you may be asked to pay more for your insurance than someone who has never been diagnosed with Mallory-Weiss Syndrome before. But don’t fret, that’s where working with a life insurance brokerage like TermLife2Go becomes so important simply because we will have dozens of options to choose from so hopefully we’ll be able to locate an insurance company that will not penalize you for having this “corrected” pre-existing medical condition.
What was the cause of your Mallory-Weiss Syndrome?
As we stated before, life insurance companies may also want to know what the root cause of your Mallory-Weiss Syndrome is.
Is it due to binge drinking?
If the answer is yes, the life insurance company will want to know if you have stopped drinking. If yes, then for how long. If no, then you will probably have a harder time qualifying, especially if you suffer from alcoholism.
Is it due to an eating disorder?
Then the life insurance company will also want to know about your recovery (if you have recovered). All of this will be important for you to secure a life insurance policy, and a good premium. The longer it’s been since you recovered from your eating disorder, the better for your life insurance premium.
Some people with Mallory-Weiss Syndrome Do Get Denied a Life Insurance Policy.
Even though Mallory-Weiss is rarely a life threatening disease, there are instances in which people are rejected a life insurance policy. Normally, people are rejected a life insurance policy with Mallory-Weiss when they have yet to seek treatment. If you have gone to the doctor, been diagnosed with Mallory-Weiss and have not yet had a surgery, then you are probably not going to qualify for a life insurance policy.
The solution? Wait until you’ve been treated for Malory-Weiss to get your life insurance policy.
What if you don’t want to wait?
The only real option for someone who currently is dealing with Mallory-Weiss is a guaranteed issue life insurance policy.
What is a guaranteed issue life insurance policy?
This is a life insurance policy that you are guaranteed to qualify for – even if you are dealing with Mallory-Weiss or any other complicated illness or disease.
There are drawbacks to getting a guaranteed issue life insurance policy.
A guaranteed issue life insurance isn’t always best life insurance policy once can purchase, but if you have an illness or any other medical problems that prevent you from getting another type of life insurance, then a guaranteed life insurance may be a pretty good deal for you.
That being said however, there are a few disadvantages that you should be aware of:
- Guaranteed issue life insurance policies tend to be pretty small (typically right around $25,000)
- Dollar-for-dollar, guaranteed issue life insurance is more expensive than other more traditional types of life insurance policies.
- And guaranteed issue life insurance policies will contain what is called a graded death benefit which will limit when your policy will begin covering natural causes of death.
