Buying Life Insurance with Myasthenia Gravis.

If you have any health problems, past or present, then qualifying for a traditional term or whole life insurance policy can become a whole different ball game.

Which is why…

When you apply for life insurance with myasthenia gravis, things my become a whole lot different than if you apply without it. So, this is why we chose to write this article so that you can get a better idea about what the “process” of applying for life insurance with myasthenia gravis will look like.  So, without further ado, we’ll dive right into it!

What is Myasthenia Gravis?

Myasthenia gravis is a neuromuscular disorder.

What happens:

There are three types of muscles in the human body. The skeletal muscles are the ones you probably think of when you hear the word “muscle”. These are your biceps, triceps, and every other muscle you work out at the gym, and then some. Basically every muscle that helps your body move is known as a skeletal muscle.

Myasthenia Gravis makes these muscles weak, thus impacting your movement.

How does it happen:

Your nerves are always talking to different parts of your body to make them function. This includes your skeletal muscles. In myasthenia gravis, this communication isn’t happening as it should. We can say there is some disturbance, kind of like when you have a bad cell phone connection. Only here, it makes your muscles not function the way they should.

When does it happen:

Usually in people over 40. Most of the time it’s caused by an autoimmune disorder. It usually impacts women earlier than it does men. Men usually get it after sixty.

Treatment options:

Unfortunately, there isn’t a current cure for myasthenia gravies, but it is possible to manage symptoms. Usually this occurs through:

  • Medication
  • Removing the Thymus Gland
  • Intravenous Immune Globulin (IVIG)
  • Plasma Exchange

With treatment, some people actually see symptoms go into remission. However, in rare cases, symptoms get worse even with or because of treatment.

Now this is when we usually like to remind people that…

Here at TermLife2Go, we’re not doctors, in fact we’re just a bunch of life insurance agents….  Or in other words, we’re medical professionals, and we do not consider this medical advice so neither should you!

We are only explaining myasthenia gravis and its relationship to life insurance. If you need medical advice, please see a medical professional.

Now, with regards to life insurance…

If you’ve recently started treatment then most life insurance companies will want to wait a bit of time to see the results before they offer you a traditional term or whole life insurance policy. Now, that’s not to say that you can’t get life insurance today  – you can – but you won’t get term or whole life insurance.

Now if you…

Have some major complications from myasthenia gravis…or some major health problems in general, then you may be worried that you won’t qualify for life insurance. This is true – you may not be able to qualify for a traditional term or whole life insurance.

Why You Won’t Qualify For Whole or Term Life Insurance?

The job of a life insurance company is to assess risk before they underwrite a term or whole life insurance policy. Because myasthenia gravis impacts your skeletal bones, it can cause a lot of problems. That’s why life insurance companies don’t insure people with whole or term life if they are still showing symptoms.

If you’re certain you won’t qualify…

Getting a term or whole life insurance policy isn’t that easy if you have major health problems. But that doesn’t mean you need to sacrifice your dream of getting life insurance to provide for your family or loved ones after you’re gone.

You can still get insured…

The best thing for you may be to look into a guaranteed issue life insurance policy. This may not be the best coverage out there, but if you don’t qualify for another policy, it’s definitely still worth getting.

If you…

Have gone into remission, then this is the best news of all! If you have not experienced symptoms of myasthenia gravis for six months or more, then you can qualify for life insurance. Of course, this depends on if your other health issues check out. If they do, then you’re on the way to a preferred rate!

It’s important to keep in mind that not all life insurance companies function in the same way. This means that not all life insurance companies will necessarily offer you a policy, and not all life insurance companies will offer you at the same rate.
